Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! (YGO) is both an Anime and a TCG. Out of those into YGO, most adults watch the anime because they play the cards, whilst most kids play the cards because they watch the anime.

As an anime, the plot is rather 2d, the characters simplistic, and the artwork is mediocre. However, it can still be fairly amusing, but generally most people will only like it because its related to the TCG.

Tha main storyline is about a boy called Yugi Mutou. A fan of a new trading card game called Duel Monsters, Yugi solves an ancient Egyptian puzzle and awakens the sleeping spirit hidden within it, a forgotten Pharoah from the times of the pyramids. However, the pharoah has no memories of his previous existence, and neither have any idea how to use the powers of the puzzle.

Somehow, the latest hit game, Duel Monsters, is linked to sinister Egyptian rituals, and with the spirit of the Pharoah, and the powers of the mysterious millenium puzzle, Yugi must decipher the mystery surrounding the game, and stop the shadows from engulfing the world, as they nearly did millenia ago.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game- Duel Monsters

The YGO TCG is one of the best TCGs there is. It has huge amounts of different tactics available, and regularly has new booster series' released, with rules that are easy to learn, but difficult to master. To play YGO at a decent level requires practically no experience or skill, but that doesnt mean the game is simple- it requires huge amounts of skill and experience to become a true expert at the art of dueling.

The game is full of corny phrases (ie "It's time to Duel!") and most of the fanbase are small children with little understanding of the game, but the game has huge potential tapped into by one heck of a lot of players (millions?) across the globe.

(Note- I am not saying all children are bad at YuGi-Oh! TCG- i have seen a lot of kids aged between 8-12 who are better than the average teen-adult player, but they are less likely to play well. Equally, age does not make you good, but older people (up till about 20-ish) are proportionally more likely to be good. Oddly, one of the worst players i ever met was about 40, so that does go to show that age isnt a huge factor.)

I won't bother telling you my credentials on the subject. To do so would be pointless- It's impossible to prove your skill as a duelist except by playing against a person regularly for a long period of time- everyone has good days, bad days, brilliant ideas and pathetic ideas. Listing tournaments won is also pointless, unless they are official national+ level tournaments. There are so many local tournaments that could be won by a decent player with a starter deck, and its impossible to tell from online descriptions whether or not the tournament falls into that kind of category.

And no, Trotters tournaments aren't great proof of skill either- a mediocre player with a beatdown modified to include 3 Magician of Faith's and the 2 Chaos Masters came second place in his first attempt in one, narrowly missing first place due to a stupid mistake. This was probably just him having a lucky day, but still, a tournament where that can happen is certainly no be all/end all of skill determination. and no, i don't know his name. I heard this from my brother (lives away from me, in the same area as the person this happened to does), who i have no reason to distrust on these matters.

(Besides. I don't play anymore, anyway. The new Forbidden rules introduced by Upperdeck are stupid, and after spending so long working on my deck for the limited/restricted lists, i just couldnt be bothere to adapt to a poorly thought out forbidden list. If it were Konami's forbidden list (a very well thought out one), I would probably still be playing, but it isn't, so im not.)
